Painters Savoyards / Joseph Communal
Joseph Victor Communal (1876-1962) - Born in Châtelard-Bauges in 1876, the son of cantonnier leaves his village to settle in Chambery at the age of 18. He work as a clerk of Roads and Bridges. During this time he performs his talents as a self-taught artist to represent in his paintings and landscapes mountain near Chambery. Married with three children and one of whom will also become a painter namely Jean Communal, Joseph Communal exercises his art during a sixty year, which may have set several times. He was a painter early on recognized and respected by all. Writers like Apollinaire and Henry Bordeaux, or the Parisian critics, not everyone did but praise for this painter pioneer in many respects. He is now regarded as the true representative of the impressionist movement facing a mountain. It is a great admirer of Swiss painter Ferdinand Hodler and the Italian Giovanni Segantini. Unlike other artists, he does not have specific subjects, which he loves more than others. He painted many landscape but also scenes of life, even if it retains today its mountains, lakes and generally its colorful landscape.
